What does the work of a translator entail? Are there special rules to follow? How important is it to be faithful to the original text? These are ancient questions: Cicero raised them more than two thousand years ago when translating the speeches of Aeschines and Demosthenes.
Leafing through the Alfabeto Italiano, the page opens at the letter T: T as in Translation, the word on which we alight on for this stage of the journey through Italian publishing. This is a word that, in the publishing industry, counts for a great deal and is fundamental in everyone’s life, even if we often don’t realise it - whether reading a book, an online article or a product label on the supermarket shelf.
